David Villa set to join Atletico Madrid

FC Barcelona just announced on their official website that they have agreed in principle to a deal that would send forward David Villa to Atletico Madrid. Villa had been linked with various Premier League sides since the end of the season, but it appears he will remain in Spain instead.

The deal will reportedly be worth up to €5.1 million with an initial fee of €2.1 million spread over this year and an additional €2 million if Villa remains with Los Colchoneros for the 2014/15 season. Barcelona would be due an additional €1 million if Villa extended his contract with the club into 2015/16. Barca also receives 50% of any future transfer fee for the player.

Villa joined the Blaugrana in 2010 and played 119 games for the club, scoring 48 goals. His role with the team was greatly reduced during the last season and the addition of Neymar made his departure an almost forgone conclusion.

The Spanish international striker turns 32 years old in December.

According to the Atletico Madrid Twitter account, Villa has agreed to terms with the club and the deal is subject to his completing a medical.
